Construction groups Sisk and Lagan are to bid for a €200m tender to construct a service tunnel at Dublin Airport to carry 3,500 vehicles a day.

The project is designed to improve safety and efficiency at the airfield, but Ryanair has objected to it, claiming it is a waste of money.

An Bord Pleanála is yet to make a decision on whether the construction can proceed after Ryanair appealed against planning permission.

The tunnel will have two lanes and will be used for airport vehicles such as cargo transporters, fuel trucks, and catering trucks.

The project involves the demolition and reinstatement of nearly 24,000 sqm of existing pavement surfaces at various locations in the airport.

The tunnel was originally planned to be operational by 2024, but the Covid pandemic and planning delays have caused setbacks.
