The main consultant working on the development of the greenway between Athlone and Galway is no longer involved in the project.

RPS, the engineering and environmental consultants, terminated their contract with Westmeath County Council in December due to financial viability concerns.

The project has faced delays and obstacles, and the departure of RPS is another setback.

Westmeath County Council is now exploring a project recovery plan and will be discussing the future direction of the project with the Department of Transport.

The preferred route chosen for the cycleway follows an indirect 200km path from Athlone to Galway through Shannonbridge, Meelick, Portumna, Gort, Kinvara, Kilcolgan and Oranmore.
