The Clongriffin spur connection with Dublin Airport is dependent on the All-Island Strategic Rail Review from the Department of Transport, according to Iarnród Éireann.

The decision to proceed with the airport rail link ultimately rests with the government, and Iarnród Éireann is ready to deliver if requested. The proposed route would involve going beyond Clongriffin Station, elevating over the M1, and going into the departure areas of Terminal 2 and Terminal 1.

Dublin Airport is not currently part of the regional or revised National Development Plan (NDP), but a draft proposal from the European Commission aims to connect major city airports to the heavy rail network by 2040.

The All-Island Strategic Rail Review includes considering connecting Dublin Airport, along with Belfast and Shannon airports, to the heavy-rail network.
