KLM is using artificial intelligence to reduce inflight food waste by accurately predicting the number of meals needed for each flight based on historical data.

The Meals On Board System uses AI technology called TRAYS to forecast passenger numbers for different classes up to 20 minutes before the flight departs.

The system has led to up to 63pc less food waste, saving 111,000 kg of inflight meals annually, with the largest improvement seen on intercontinental flights from Schiphol.

KLM is utilising AI in various other areas, including simulating bad weather, providing personalised travel tips to customers, and exploring AI for faster baggage security checks at Amsterdam Schiphol airport.
