Fianna Fáil TD Jim O’Callaghan and senator Michael McDowell have advocated for relocating Dublin MetroLink’s terminus from Charlemont to Tara Street or St Stephen’s Green
They say this will enable integration with other transport modes in the city centre. Mr O’Callaghan said “Charlemont is not a major rail hub, he said, is not a city centre location and is a minor Luas station.” Mr McDowell said it is the most “”unobvious location you could imagine” to end the metro link.
Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) projects 10m annual passengers at Charlemont, highlighting existing transportation infrastructure challenges in handling such volume, citing strong interconnection with other transit links.

Labour’s transport spokesperson Duncan Smith endorses the MetroLink plan and route, emphasising the transformative potential of the project for Dublin, advocating for improved connectivity and addressing the city’s traffic congestion issues, with questions raised on potential alignment changes affecting project timeline and cost by TII.
