West on Track, a voluntary community organisation headed up by Frank Dawson, Colmán Ó Raghallaigh and Peter Bowen Walsh, was awarded the Meitheal Award for 2024 at a gala ceremony hosted by the Mayo Association in Dublin, attended by over 300 people including Minster Dara Calleary.
The award was given in recognition of West on Track’s campaign over 20 years to re-open the rail line from Limerick to Sligo, with the section from Ennis to Athenry successfully operating since 2010 and future plans to reopen the Athenry to Claremorris section recommended by the All-Island Rail Review in July 2023.
This reopening will allow rail-connected towns in Mayo and Galway to be reconnected to Galway and Limerick, facilitating freight transportation to southern ports.
West on Track is now focusing on linking the growth centre of Sligo to the regional capital in Galway, aiming to bring towns like Kiltimagh, Tubbercurry, and Sligo back onto the national rail network and reconnect them to Galway.
