The city centre of Dublin will implement measures in August to reduce “through traffic,” banning cars from Bachelor’s Walk and Aston Quay following the approval of the new transport plan by Dublin City Council.
The plan includes the introduction of “bus gates” on the quays, restricting passage to public transport only, and prohibiting private cars from turning left on Westland Row to Pearse Street.
Brendan O’Brien, Manager of Traffic at DCC, stated that the plan will start with a series of traffic management changes to transition the quays into bus gates, allowing only public transport, taxis, cyclists, and pedestrians to create space for active travel.
While the majority of submissions supported the measures, concerns were raised by some businesses and private car users, including disabled drivers, prompting ongoing discussions with key stakeholders like DublinTown, Dublin Chamber, and businesses like Guinness brewer Diageo to address concerns and find suitable solutions for truck movements and access issues.
