Owner VINCI Airports will invest £100m in improving operational efficiency, passenger experience, and environmental performance at the airport
New legislation from the Westminster government will require airports to have the technology in place by June 2024. Many English airports will miss the deadline and it is unclear if Belfast International will have the new scanners in action by the start of summer.
Security checkpoints will also no longer require passengers to remove tablets and laptops from hand luggage, with new technology providing more detailed images of bag contents, carry liquids in containers up to two litres without using clear plastic bags.
The technology is in place at Shannon< Kerry and Donegal airports. Dublin will complete the roll out of the new scanners in Terminal 2 by autumn and Terminal 1 by October 2025.
