American Airlines has reduced its expected number of new mainline aircraft deliveries for the year from 29 to 22, with anticipated deliveries now including 16 B737-8s, 3 B787-9s, and 3 A321-200NX.
The airline has experienced delivery delays across manufacturers due to regulatory restrictions, supply chain limitations, and development delays, impacting its fleet planning.
American previously forecasted increased deliveries for the following years but did not update this guidance in the first quarter of 2024 results, with delays leading to route suspensions for the summer.
Despite Boeing’s quality issues impacting delivery delays, American Airlines states that these setbacks have been offset by improvements in regional aircraft utilization and that they are less dependent on new aircraft deliveries compared to other carriers.
