Qantas has agreed to pay remediation amounts to approximately 86,000 customers ranging from AUD225 to AUD450 Australian dollars, as well as a AUD100 million penalty, for selling tickets on flights it had cancelled or was planning to cancel.

The agreement with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) follows legal action initiated by the agency in September 2023 and remains subject to court ratification.

Qantas will commence the remediation program ahead of court approval, with CEO Vanessa Hudson describing the settlement as an important step in restoring confidence in the airline.

The ACCC accused Qantas of selling tickets on over 8,000 cancelled flights between May and July 2022, with the airline agreeing not to repeat such conduct and committing to notify customers of cancelled flights promptly and cease sales of cancelled flights within 24 hours of a decision.
