WATCH: ‘Africa is no longer the Dark Continent’ (from Indaba 2024)

Jerry Mabena, Motsamayi, CEO of Motsamayi Tourism Group speaking at Indaba 2024: “For the longest time, Africa has often been referred to as the ‘Dark Continent.’ However, I believe we are now a continent that has risen. There was a time when South Africa was considered a gateway to the rest of Africa, during an era marked by a lot of pessimism about the continent. Now, we are in an era where Africa has opened up significantly.

While South Africa is still perceived as a gateway, which is an important recognition, we have the infrastructure—such as roads, airports, and other physical infrastructures—and a robust financial banking system. This means we have a lot to share with the rest of the world. The notion of being a gateway should not be seen as a final destination but as a channel to direct efforts into the rest of the continent. Therefore, it is important for us not to view ourselves merely as beneficiaries of this role but as those who will share our resources and knowledge with the rest of the continent.”
