Patricia de Lille, South Africa’s minister for tourism predicted the ANC would return to power in today’s South African elections in an interview with Travel Extra at Indaba 2024.

She said: The elections are coming, so it is for myself as campaigning and running a government department. There are a lot of speculation about the elections. Don’t believe them, don’t believe the polls. These polls are almost published on a daily basis, and there are a lot of speculations that the current ruling party might get below 50pc. Should that be the case, will there be a coalition? And then the next question is, who will be the coalition partners? For me, it is that you only talk coalitions after the elections, but already some parties have formed some blocks before the election, so it’s a very interesting election for us 30 years after our democracy.

This is the year that we are celebrating 30 years of democracy, and indeed, we have a story to tell. Many of our museums are telling the stories, and we are proud that we have come this far. You also have the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg, and the District Six Museum in Cape Town where in the early ’60s, the apartheid regime just flattened, and most of that land has still not been given back to the people.
