Construction of the extension to Waterford Airport’s runway is delayed until next year as the Government considers a €12m financial contribution for the project, with airport officials still engaging with government officials on outstanding matters.
The Comer brothers are providing €12m of private funds for the project in collaboration with the Bolster Group to allow the Comer Group to take a major stake in the airport.
Waterford Airport has been without commercial scheduled airline services since 2016, and the runway extension would enable the airport to handle jets like the Boeing 737 used by Ryanair.
Talks with potential airlines have been held, estimating that the airport could handle around 345,000 passengers annually within five years of completing the extension project, which will cost approximately €25m.
