Jordi Hereu, Spain’s industry minister, said Barcelona should “use the city’s tools” to limit the situation whenever necessary to create a proposal for visitors.
At the Barcelona tourism office consortium, Hereu defended tourism as a positive phenomenon and called for making it a local experience to improve cities and countries.
Industry Minister Jordi Hereu said “it is true that we are growing but this phenomenon must be managed. We are not going to ban people from coming to Spain, but we can put limits on the tourist offer. Barcelona city should use the tools it has to build a proposal for visitors. Tourism is an absolutely positive social, economic and cultural phenomenon, and can be turned into something local to build better cities and countries. Last year, more than 1.3bn people travelled. The world is going to have more and more tourism and we have to be prepared.”
