Shannon Airport has applied for permission for a 5.5-acre 1.2MW solar farm project on the airfield, as part of its preparations for an expected increase in passenger numbers.

Other projects being considered by Shannon Airport Authority DAC include expanding car parking spaces and departure gates to accommodate the growing number of passengers.

The solar farm is seen as a way to reduce costs, promote sustainability, and decrease reliance on traditional fossil fuels.

Shannon Group, the parent company of Shannon Airport, reported increased profits in 2023 and plans to fund the capital expenditure for these projects internally. Delivery is targeted for Q2 2025.
