A former Boeing quality-control manager, Merle Meyers, alleges that workers at the 787 Dreamliner factory in Everett, Washington routinely took unsuitable parts from the scrap yard and put them back on assembly lines.
Meyers claims that this practice was an organized effort by Boeing managers to meet production deadlines, leading to about 50,000 parts being used in aircraft over more than a decade.
The quality lapses witnessed by Meyers were intentional efforts to bypass safety regulations and keep up with demanding production schedules.
Meyers raised his concerns internally with Boeing’s corporate investigations team, but he felt that the company failed to enforce safety rules and take appropriate action. Boeing did not dispute Meyers’ allegations but stated that they investigate all improper behaviour allegations.
