Up to 30,000 pilgrims are expected to climb Croagh Patrick on July 28 for the annual pilgrimage known as Reek Sunday, where participants pray, confess, and take part in Mass.
The pilgrimage is part of the Year of Prayer designated by Pope Francis, with this year’s theme focusing on honoring grandparents and the elderly.
The pilgrimage weekend begins on July 26 with a local pilgrimage and Mass on the summit, followed by a Vigil Mass on July 27 and Confessions and Masses on July 28 on the summit of Croagh Patrick.
The tradition of climbing Croagh Patrick for over 1500 years is associated with Saint Patrick, who spent forty days fasting there in 441 AD, following the example of Christ and Moses. Pilgrims are advised to be prepared for challenging conditions and urged to follow safety guidelines to protect the environment and preserve the tradition of Reek Sunday.
