Ethiopian Airlines has been informed by the Eritrean Civil Aviation Authority that all its flights to Eritrea will be suspended effective September 30, 2024.
The Eritrean Civil Aviation Authority cited “malicious trading practices” by Ethiopian Airlines, including luggage theft, pilferage, and unjustified price hikes, among other irregularities, as reasons for the suspension.
Ethiopian Airlines is seeking clarification from the Eritrean authority and aims to resolve the issues promptly, as it currently serves the route between Addis Ababa and Asmara.
The ban on Ethiopian Airlines’ flights to Eritrea has not extended to the use of Eritrean airspace, but if it does, it would significantly impact the airline’s operations, potentially requiring rerouting through Djibouti airspace amid strained relations between the two countries.
