Aer Lingus has announced the closure of its cargo facility at Shannon due to decreased demand and a lack of commercial justification for a dedicated presence in the west. The closure is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.

The decision comes after a review by IAG International Airlines Group Cargo, citing the need for significant capital investment that is not supported by the level of cargo activity at Shannon Airport. The company will enter a consultation process with staff representatives to explore options.

The airline stated that significant capital investment is required at its cargo building in Shannon, but added that the level of cargo activity at the airport would not support this.

Despite efforts to secure additional cargo business in recent years, including diverting loads from other areas, Aer Lingus has decided to close the Shannon facility. In 2021, the airline closed its crew base in the city as well.

Shannon Airport authorities stated that cargo demand remains strong, and they will continue to collaborate with other cargo carriers such as DHL Air, UPS Airlines, and FedEx Express. Cargo levels at Shannon have reportedly grown by 23pc overall since 2018.
