The United States Department of Transportation (DOT) looks set to approve the proposed $1.9bn merger between Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines following clearance from the Justice Department (DOJ).

The Department of Justice extended the review period multiple times, with the proposed merger now subject to the DOT’s approval of an interim exemption application submitted by both airlines.

Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines plan to integrate their operations while continuing to operate under their respective brands, with Alaska assuming $900m of Hawaiian’s debt as part of the agreement announced by their parent companies on December 2.
