Bergamo closed for 11 hours after Ryanair undercarriage tyre blowout upon landing

All flights at Milan Bergamo Airport were disrupted on Tuesday due to a Ryanair flight’s rear undercarriage tyre blowout upon landing, resulting in delays, diversions, or cancellations.

Aircraft EI-IGI was disabled, with damage on all main tires. The runway was also damaged, over a distance of 450 metres.

The incident occurred at 07:55 am and, while it did not endanger passengers, it caused significant runway damage, necessitating urgent repairs.

Operations at the airport resumed at 18.00 local time, with some flights not expected to be operational until later in the day.

Nearby alternative airports which accommodated diverted flights included Verona and Milan Malpensa. Airlines are legally required to transport affected passengers to their final destinations.

Airport authorities shared; “SACBO advises that due to an aircraft grounded on the runway due to technical problems, operations are suspended. Departing flights are delayed and arriving flights may be diverted or cancelled until reopened. No passengers or crew members were injured.
