Air India has announced an increase in baggage fees for passengers on long-haul flights to Europe, impacting those with a second checked bag.
The airline says that new fee structure aligns with industry standards set by other international airlines, enhancing the airline’s competitive edge.
Under the recently introduced ‘fare families,’ the ‘Value’ fare option allows for one piece of checked baggage, while additional baggage can only be secured through ‘Classic’ or ‘Flex’ fares at an additional cost.
This shift reflects Air India’s strategy to move away from a uniform pricing model, aiming to provide more tailored options for travellers while offering increased flexibility and additional services.
Passengers checking in two bags will now have to choose higher economy fares, and pay additional fees starting around Rs 4,000 (€45) per journey.
This new policy represents a shift from Air India’s previous practice of providing more generous baggage allowances to attract customers.
Lufthansa’s economy passengers are permitted only one checked bag as part of their standard fare.
British Airways provides multiple fare options, some of which include allowances for two checked bags, depending on the specific ticket type purchased.
