Flights to six Russian airports banned by EU in new round of sanctions

The EU has introduced a 16th package of sanctions against Russian airlines, coinciding with the third anniversary of its invasion of Ukraine, tightening restrictions on the Russian aviation sector.

The new measures prohibit any airline operating domestic flights within Russia from flying to or over EU airspace, expanding previous bans applicable only to Russian carriers.

Six airports, including Moscow Vnukovo and Ekaterinburg, have been designated for sanctions due to their military significance, preventing EU companies from conducting transactions with their operators.

The UK added S7 Airlines and its CEO Vladislav Filev to its sanctions list, while Australia and New Zealand imposed their own sanctions, not affecting the aviation sector.
