1,872 new consular cases involving Irish people in 2024 – DFA

The Department of Foreign Affairs says 1,872 new consular cases were recorded last year where the department was asked to intervene.

There has been a 50pc increase in the number of consular cases managed by the Department over the past three years.

One of the big increases has been in child abduction cases continue to pose a challenge for Irish consulates dealing with citizens abroad.

The cases range from high profile cases such as the improsinment of Bernard Phelan for use in a trade off by Iran to legal infractions.
