Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury expressed that Europe should consider imposing tariffs on imported Boeing aircraft if the United States maintains its 10% tariff on new Airbus aircraft, during a media conference on 6 May.

Ongoing negotiations with the US aim to resolve the issue of the baseline 10% tariff, but Faury warned that reciprocal tariffs may be necessary to encourage better negotiations if no positive outcome is reached.

US President Donald Trump has suspended plans for a 20% tariff on imports from the EU during these negotiations, while Airbus continues to operate manufacturing facilities in the US for some of its aircraft.

Currently, US airlines have 79 widebodies on order from Airbus, with Delta Air Lines and United Airlines among the customers impacted by the ongoing tariff situation.

The European Union has not yet retaliated with tariffs on US imports, but is prepared with a tariff package worth EUR110 billion targeting the US if negotiations do not progress satisfactorily.

Guillaume Faury shared “I imagine that reciprocal tariffs on aircraft will be imposed to force a higher level of negotiation. Our imports to the US from other countries are also penalised.”
