The European Club, established in 1987 by Pat Ruddy, was sold after being listed for over €35m.

The 193-acre property in Brittas Bay is recognised on numerous World Top 100 Golf Courses lists.

Rory McIlroy and Padraig Harrington have achieved national championships at this venue, hosting golf legends including Tiger Woods and Gary Player.

Previous offers for the club were turned down by Ruddy, with Rathangan-born businessmen Raymond and Nicky Conlan confirmed as the new owners.

The property listing said: “Privately owned, a purposeful decision was made to maintain a small membership, currently in the mid-80s, to give comfortable golf to the owners and members while affording the opportunity to accept visiting paying patrons to a level suited to financial planning. This gives a new owner the choice of remaining private, going ultra private or maximising commercial golf traffic through world visitor play and an enlarged membership.”
