King House in Boyle, built in 1720 by the King family, will mark its 30th anniversary as a visitor centre with events on July 4 and July 6, 2025, following its 1995 opening by President Mary Robinson.
Originally a home, it served as a military barracks for the Connaught Rangers from 1795 and later a turf and feed store, before falling into disrepair by the 1970s.
Roscommon County Council acquired the property in 1987 and restored it over four years, transforming it into a cultural hub hosting the Boyle Civic Arts Collection, Connaught Rangers museum, and Boyle Town Library.
The house is a key venue for the Boyle Arts Festival, weddings, conferences, and cultural events, and features collections donated by President Mary McAleese and honouring Maureen O’Sullivan.
Anniversary events and publications include talks on the house’s history, the Connaught Rangers, and a theatre performance, with speakers like Paul Connolly, Oliver Fallon, and Julie Sharkey.
Triona Mullaney Dignam’s “Rockingham, A Little Guide to the Big House offers a glimpse into the grandeur and legacy of the King family’s later home.”
Nigel O’Reilly’s “The Hidden Gem and Evolution of a Goldsmith explores the artistry and craftsmanship that shaped Boyle’s cultural heritage.”
