US Department of Transportation terminates Aeroméxico-Delta Air Lines joint venture

The US Department of Transportation terminated the Aeroméxico-Delta Air Lines joint venture’s approval and antitrust immunity, effective 1 January 2026.

The decision cites market distortions by the Mexican government, including banning all-cargo operations and implementing a non-standard slot regime at México City International.

The DOT claims the joint venture creates higher fares, stifled innovation, and reduced capacity due to government interventions.

Aeroméxico and Delta can continue their codeshare agreement and frequent flyer programme reciprocity. Delta holds a 20pc stake in Aeroméxico, and their 2022 antitrust immunity application remains on hold.

US DOT shared: “In such an environment, it is inappropriate for the Department to continue a grant of antitrust immunity because there is inadequate competition in the market.”

Aeroméxico shared in a written statement: “We regret this decision, which ignores the benefits the alliance has provided to connectivity, tourism, and consumers in Mexico.”

Delta Air Lines shared in a written statement: “We are disappointed that the Department of Transportation has chosen to terminate its approval of the strategic and pro-competitive partnership between Delta and Aeroméxico.”
