Details have been reached of the Blue Lagoon in Malta rehabilitation proposal that includes removing kiosks to create a 200-metre scenic walkway for improved accessibility and views. Up to 35,000 square metres of garigue landscapes will be restored, protected by traditional rubble walls and conservation measures.
Vessel operations will relocate away from the swimming zone, which will expand by 5,600 square metres, with safer docking areas introduced. Degraded areas will be repurposed into low-lying visitor facilities, including information points, seating, and sustainable food and beverage services.
The proposal, covering 55,400 square metres, will undergo public consultation and permitting processes with environmental authorities.
Ian Borg shared: “These proposals demonstrate what can be achieved through collaboration and a shared determination to seek effective solutions to long-standing challenges.”
Carlo Micallef shared: “By restoring Comino’s delicate ecosystems, creating safer and more accessible spaces, and introducing sustainable practices, we are not only improving the quality of today’s visits but also ensuring that future generations can enjoy this natural treasure.”
Jonathan Mizzi shared: “These are key site-sensitive steps that permit us to live in harmony with nature.”
