Two Cork walking trails have opened extensions. The Clonakilty N71 Gallanes project has extended the Joe Walsh Walkway by 1km, linking to the rugby club.
Features include a new car park, picnic tables, lighting, and a safe crossing. Bandon’s Clare O’Leary walkway, named for the first Irishwoman to climb Everest, has been upgraded to 2.7km with a 3-metre-wide off-road path.
Amenities add seating and picnic spaces, funded by Transport Infrastructure Ireland.
Routes support school travel, local journeys, and wellbeing enhancements.
Darragh O’Brien shared: “These projects will deliver a wide range of benefits—safer routes for students travelling to school, healthier and more sustainable options for short local journeys, and improvements in overall wellbeing.”
Moira Murrell shared: “The extensions in Clonakilty and Bandon are part of a wider, long-term vision to create a comprehensive network of high-quality, accessible routes that encourage people to walk, cycle and choose more sustainable ways to travel.”
Mary Linehan Foley shared: “It is a proud day for West Cork as we officially open extensions to two popular walking and cycling routes.”
