The Tóchar Project has selected the first four sites for fen restoration under EU Just Transition funding: Fin Lough in Offaly and Scragh Bog, Lough Garr and Lough Owel in Westmeath.
Fens receive focus as alkaline peatlands dependent on groundwater flows, with the initiative funding scientific assessments, on-site restoration and monitoring over several years.
Plans cover 36 fen sites across the midlands, starting with these locations to maintain health and support biodiversity. Farmers acquire land through the project to contribute to natural recovery efforts.
