Global passenger numbers approach 10bn in 2025 for the first time

Global passenger traffic is projected to reach 9.8bn in 2025, a 3.7pc increase from 2024, according to ACI World.

International traffic grew 13.3pc in 2024, reaching 3.8bn passengers, while domestic traffic rose 4.5pn to 5bn.Africa’s passenger traffic will hit 273 million in 2025, with a 9.4pc growth rate, driven by tourism and middle-class expansion.Asia-Pacific, with 3.6bn passengers, leads as the largest market, though East Asia faces challenges from overcapacity and weak spending.

Europe expects 2.5bn passengers, with international growth in Southern Europe offset by domestic rail competition.

International travel remains the main engine of growth, but regional variations reflect a mix of structural strengths, policy challenges, and evolving travel patterns.”
