The Department of Transport has published its 2025-2028 Statement of Strategy, outlining six goals: connectivity, regulation, sustainability, access, safety and organisational excellence.

The strategy aligns with the Programme for Government, focusing on safe, accessible and sustainable transport systems supporting communities and businesses.

An Implementation Plan details strategic objectives and monitoring, deploying financial, technological and staffing resources for efficient transport networks.

Safety on roads remains a priority, alongside reliable transport and sustainable modes boosting rural economies across Ireland.

The strategy followed consultations with internal and external stakeholders to ensure alignment with national goals and public needs.

The key strategic goals: 

  • Connectivity: To ensure that people and businesses are well-connected across Ireland.
  • Effective Policy and Regulation: To develop and implement clear and effective policies and regulations for the transport sector.
  • Sustainability (Economy, Environment and Society): To foster a transport system that is economically viable, environmentally friendly, and beneficial to society.
  • Transport Access: To ensure equitable access to transportation for all communities and individuals.
  • Safety and Security: To guarantee the safety and security of all transport systems and users.
  • Organisational Excellence and Innovation: To promote a high-performing and innovative Department and transport sector.
