Skellig Michael boat operators call to ease access restrictions

Boat operators reliant on Skellig Michael have called for easing of strict access restrictions after a season closed to landings for over 50pc of its four-and-a-half month duration, ending last week.

The Unesco world heritage site faced closures amid legal battles over boat licences, with the Office of Public Works precluded from issuing summer 2025 permits until court resolution.

The Skellig Coast Tourism Network, representing over 120 businesses, warned of damage to livelihoods and Ireland’s tourism reputation if issues persist.

Donal McCrohan, chairman of the Skellig Boatmen’s Association, has expressed frustration over the closures during fine weather, affecting villages and the broader hospitality industry in Kerry.

Donal McCrohan shared “This is bigger than the boatmen, it is the entire hospitality industry. Skellig Michael is critical not only to Iveragh and south Kerry but to all of Kerry.”
