Waterford Treasures will host a free conference, “Memories of the Emergency,” on November 8 at City Hall, Waterford, marking 80 years since WWII ended.

The event features a keynote by Michael Kennedy on Ireland’s WWII foreign and defence policies at 10:00. Presentations include Eugene Broderick on Ireland’s Emergency period and Andrew Doherty on WWII maritime incidents in Waterford Harbour.

Afternoon sessions cover local stories, including a Waterford man’s D-Day experience and wartime sporting life. The conference stems from an oral history project preserving personal WWII accounts, supported by Creative Waterford.

Michael Kennedy shared: “Ireland’s foreign and defence policies during WWII reflect its complex position on the edge of global conflict.”

Waterford Treasures shared: “This conference celebrates the resilience of Waterford’s people during the Emergency.”
