Wexford’s Johnstown Castle museum donates 1960s soil testing device to the FAO MuNe in Rome.

A 1960s soil testing device from the Irish Agricultural Museum in Wexford is donated to the FAO MuNe in Rome.

The device, designed by Pat Hayes and Dr Austin O’Sullivan, improved soil sampling efficiency in Ireland. Ireland’s soil science advancements in the mid-20th century transformed agriculture post-famine.

The FAO MuNe, launched on World Food Day, focuses on global food systems and sustainability. Teagasc continues soil research at Johnstown Castle, supporting Ireland’s agri-food industry.

Matt Wheeler shared, “We are proud that the Irish Agricultural Museum has contributed an item of historical importance to the FAO MuNe. This soil testing device stands as a symbol of Ireland’s scientific innovation and its commitment to sustainable farming.”
