American Airlines is expanding its international network for the summer 2027 season by launching seven new international routes, featuring three brand-new European destinations. The carrier’s strategic expansion leans heavily on its new, fuel-efficient Airbus A321XLR aircraft to connect smaller European cities directly from its East Coast hubs.
American Airlines is introducing three unique European cities to its network, primarily operating out of Philadelphia. Vienna, Austria launches on 6 May 2027 on the Airbus A321XLR. American will be the only US airline flying nonstop to Vienna, and the route will extend through early January 2028 to accommodate travellers visiting the Christmas markets. Porto, Portugal launches on 28 March 2027 on the Airbus A321XLR. Reykjavik, Iceland launches on 27 May 2027 using an Airbus A321neo, marking the airline’s return to Iceland for the first time since 2019.
Additional routes include New York JFK to Nice, France with daily summer service; Charlotte to Barcelona, Spain on a Boeing 777-200ER starting 27 May 2027; New York JFK to London Heathrow boosting capacity to four daily flights in partnership with British Airways; and Chicago O’Hare to Tokyo Narita, Japan, restoring a route American has not flown in seven years. Tickets go on sale from 31 August 2026.
