Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN) recorded 385 flight cancellations over the weekend of 3–4 October 2026after torrential rain and severe thunderstorms swept across Catalonia. According to Civil Protection figures, the worst of the operational impact hit on Saturday, 3 October, which accounted for approximately 250 of the cancelled flights.
In addition to the cancellations, surviving flights faced delays stretching over four hours. Air traffic controllers were forced to space out operations and strictly limit airspace capacity due to the intensity of the storm over the sea and mainland Catalonia.
The severe weather triggered a red alert warning for extreme danger across the region. Beyond aviation trackers reporting massive airport backlogs, the rain caused widespread flooding on regional roads, suspended parts of the Rodalies rail network, and briefly brought high-speed rail lines between Barcelona and Tarragona to a complete standstill.
Major carriers, including regional operator Vueling as well as budget airlines Ryanair and easyJet, have scrapped multi-route connections. Travelers are strongly urged to check their flight status directly with their airline before departing for El Prat.
