A major cable fire near Vienna’s Praterstern station on August 13, 2026 has severely disrupted regional rail links and airport travel. The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) has introduced an emergency timetable to help passengers navigate the damage. The fire broke out around 1:30 a.m. inside a technical area near Praterstern station.

Investigators believe the fire was a technical issue caused by a material defect in the cables, ruling out external tampering or vandalism. The fire ruined a central signal tower and over 20 kilometres of technical cables for signalling, power, and telecommunications must be completely replaced. Heavy disruptions are expected to last for weeks, running straight into a major, previously planned S-Bahn modernisation shutdown starting September 7, 2026.

The main suburban train lines and express airport lines are heavily blocked. The City Airport Train (CAT) is completely out of service, with a special CAT replacement bus service running directly between Wien Mitte and Airport Terminal 3, taking about 21 minutes. Long-distance Railjet and Intercity trains run normally from Vienna Central Station directly to the airport, taking 14 to 15 minutes. The Vienna Airport Bus is fully operational and unaffected by the rail closures. Local transit operator Wiener Linien honours ÖBB train tickets on the city’s subways and buses so passengers bypass the broken rail links.
