European river cruises on the Rhine and Danube are disrupted by low water levels, with normal operations not expected to resume until mid-October 2026 at the earliest. An extended period of dry weather, above-average temperatures and limited rainfall have rendered key sections of these rivers unsuitable for standard navigation. The hardest-hit waterways are the Rhine and the Danube, particularly sections of the Upper Danube near Regensburg, Passau and Budapest, and parts of the Rhine near Cologne, Koblenz and Mannheim.

While total cancellations are the exception, low water forces operators to implement ship swaps, itinerary adjustments, hotel stays and lengthy motorcoach transfers instead of full river sailing. Lines like Riviera Travel and AmaWaterways are offering modified alternative routes, such as sailing north into the Netherlands and Belgium, future cruise credits or refund options for impacted travellers. Riviera Travel does not anticipate normal Rhine sailings before mid-October and is offering alternative itineraries sailing north from Düsseldorf into the Netherlands and Belgium.

Guests who accept the change receive future cruise credit or a full refund, with about 75pc choosing the alternative so far. On the Danube, sailings start with a night in Budapest before a train transfer to Vienna. Operators such as Viking are employing a strategy where passengers pack up, take a motorcoach past the shallowest stretch of the river, and board an identical sister ship waiting on the other side. For heavily impacted routes, operators like Scenic Cruises and Riviera Travel have proactively cancelled sailings or issued initial alerts for departures.
