Work on the South Kerry Greenway is advancing rapidly with the next major section between Glenbeigh and Drom West due to open to the public ahead of the Easter weekend. Kerry County Council has confirmed that the new stretch will welcome walkers and cyclists from Friday 3 April 2026, adding another important stage to what officials describe as one of the most ambitious greenway projects in Ireland.
The council has revealed that the South Kerry Greenway is not like any other greenway in the country. Built along the route of the old Great Southern and Western Railway line, the path clings dramatically to the escarpment at Mountain Stage, offering elevated views high above the Atlantic Ocean. While it runs parallel to the famous Ring of Kerry road, the greenway delivers a completely different experience with dramatic coastal scenery, mountain backdrops and the constant sound of the sea far below.
This latest section forms part of a long-term vision to create a world-class 40-kilometre greenway from Killorglin to Cahersiveen. When complete, the route is expected to attract thousands of additional visitors to south Kerry each year and provide a major boost to local tourism businesses. Construction teams have overcome challenging terrain and engineering difficulties to bring the project to this stage, with further sections still to be developed in the coming years.
