Killorglin is gearing up for one of Ireland’s oldest festivals to commence tomorrow. Held annually from 10–12 August, this historic 3-day event blends ancient Celtic traditions, livestock trading, and 12 hours of free daily street entertainment. The festival follow a strict three-day structure:

Day 1: Gathering Day

  • Catching the King: A wild mountain goat is caught in the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks and brought into the town.
  • The Coronation Parade: A colorful parade fills the streets as a local schoolgirl, crowned the “Queen of Puck,” officially crowns the goat “King Puck”.
  • The Hoisting: King Puck is hoisted onto a high, 40-foot stand in the town square, where he reigns over the festival for 72 hours.
  • The Horse Fair: A traditional trading market where horse dealers from across the country meet to buy and sell livestock.

Day 2: Fair Day

  • The Cattle Fair: The morning starts with the historic cattle market, continuing centuries-old agricultural trading traditions.
  • Street Celebrations: Street performers, musicians, artisan craft markets, and food stalls pack the town centre.

Day 3: Scattering Day

  • The Dethronement: King Puck is lowered from his stand, stripped of his crown, and safely returned unharmed to his mountain home.
  • Fireworks Finale: The festival concludes at midnight with a massive, free fireworks display over the River Laune.

Due to historical exemptions dating back centuries, local pubs traditionally remain open until 3:00 AM. Open-air concerts featuring traditional Irish music, ballad singers, and contemporary bands play on outdoor stages across all three days. A large funfair with carnival rides operates throughout the town for children and teenagers.
