Leitrim County Councillors have called on Irish Rail to reopen the rail line from Collooney to Claremorris. The call follows Mayo and Galway County Councils asking Sligo County Council to challenge the decision to lease the line for use as a greenway. Sligo County Council is set to debate the topic at a meeting next Monday.
Leitrim Councillor Sean McGowan, a former Irish Rail employee, reported that a greenway being laid on the line would spell the end of the rail project. The councils have expressed support for restoring rail services on the route.
The debate comes as local authorities consider the future use of the disused rail corridor. The line has been the subject of discussion regarding potential greenway development.
Sean McGowan shared “A greenway being laid on the line would spell the end of the rail project.”
