Lufthansa City Airlines has officially launched its new base at Frankfurt Airport, the Lufthansa Group’s largest hub, marking a significant expansion following its Munich debut in summer 2024. Operations commenced on 9 February 2026, with the inaugural flight to Manchester on an Airbus A320neo. The move aims to strengthen the group’s short-haul network and market position in Europe.

The initial flight schedule from Frankfurt includes connections to Manchester, Berlin, and Valencia in February, with Düsseldorf and Málaga added in March using a second aircraft. From summer 2026, the network will expand further to destinations like London Heathrow, Stockholm, Bilbao, Hamburg, Helsinki, Ibiza, Marseille, and Bucharest. The Frankfurt fleet is set to grow to seven Airbus A320neo aircraft by September 2026, complementing the 13 aircraft at Munich.

In 2025, Lufthansa City Airlines operated nearly 16,000 flights, carrying about 2m passengers to 27 destinations, demonstrating steady growth. The airline is actively recruiting, having hired around 60 employees in Frankfurt, with plans for an additional 80 cockpit crew and 200 cabin crew members, bringing the total workforce to approximately 450. Since September 2025, it has been a permanent Star Alliance member, offering enhanced global connectivity and benefits.

Peter Albers shared “With our new base and the targeted expansion of our short-haul network, we are simultaneously strengthening our market position and laying the foundation for further growth within the Group.” This expansion underscores Lufthansa City Airlines’ role in advancing European short-haul traffic and supporting the group’s overall development.
