The Airbus H225 helicopters acquired by Kitz-Air from Milestone Aviation will support firefighting missions across Europe and South America, where wildfire seasons continue to extend in duration and intensity. The conversion programme for the three helicopters will be carried out by Global Helicopter Services, adapting the aircraft for utility missions including water bombing and fire suppression operations.
The growing demand for aerial firefighting assets has placed pressure on helicopter operators and leasing companies to maintain sufficient capacity for peak summer seasons. Southern European countries including Greece, Italy, Spain, and Portugal have experienced destructive wildfires in recent years, with firefighting resources often stretched to their limits. The Airbus H225’s large payload capability and long-range performance have made it an attractive choice for firefighting operators worldwide, with its ability to carry substantial water loads and operate from temporary forward bases.
The acquisition by Kitz-Air represents a strategic expansion of the Austrian operator’s heavy-lift fleet, positioning the company to respond to wildfire contracts across multiple jurisdictions. European Union mechanisms for mutual assistance during wildfire emergencies have increased the need for rapidly deployable aerial assets that can cross national borders. The conversion work being undertaken by Global Helicopter Services includes installation of water tanks, snorkel systems, and avionics upgrades for firefighting operations. Milestone Aviation has positioned itself as a key player in the firefighting helicopter leasing market, with the Dublin-based company supporting customers in approximately 35 countries across multiple sectors.
