National Museum of Ireland staff attended the launch of Millennium: European Year of the Normans at the historic Abbaye aux Dames in Caen, Normandy. Matt Seaver and Diarmuid Ó Riain from the Irish Antiquities Division joined colleagues from the National Library of Ireland for the international event. The launch marked the beginning of a major programme commemorating the Norman legacy in 2027, one thousand years after the birth of William the Conqueror.
Ireland’s contribution will include “Deeds and Misdeeds: Ireland and the Norman World,” a landmark exhibition co-curated by the National Museum of Ireland and the National Library of Ireland. The exhibition will be presented as part of the Museum’s 150th anniversary programme. It will explore the enduring impact of the Normans on Ireland through manuscripts, objects and educational resources.
The event was supported by the National Monuments Service, Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, the Embassy of France in Ireland, and the Embassy of Ireland France.
