Ryanair has received €4.2m refund from Italy’s competition watchdog after the country’s Council of State ruled that the authority discriminated against the LCC in a 2021 Covid-linked fine. The dispute stemmed from a 2021 fine for not reimbursing customers for flights cancelled after travel restrictions ended. The airline stated it welcomes the refund and called on Italy’s prime minister to reform the AGCM.
Ryanair stated that €440,000 in interest must also be refunded, and the airline is requesting the AGCM to pay these outstanding amounts without further delay. The AGCM had fined Ryanair €4.2m, while easyJet was fined €2.8m and Volotea was fined €1.4m.
Ryanair shared, “We welcome the EUR4.2m refund of this unlawful fine from the AGCM, which was annulled by the Council of State after it found that the Authority had discriminated against Ryanair.”
