  • United offered 90-day status match to Delta and American elites
  • Applications closed October 15
  • Spending thresholds ranged from $1,500 to $7,000
  • Starlink connectivity served as marketing hook
  • More than 600 United aircraft equipped with Starlink by October 1

United Airlines is making a direct play for elite travelers at Delta Air Lines and American Airlines, offering comparable status for 90 days and a path to retain it through January 2028. Starlink Wi-Fi functions as the hook, while the underlying target is the premium and corporate spending generated by customers who fly often and expect to remain connected. Applications close October 15, giving eligible travelers a narrow window to test United without starting at the bottom of its loyalty program.

United gave U.S.-based MileagePlus members with earned or lifetime status at Delta or American until October 15 to make the jump, while excluding travelers whose tier came through a trial or promotion. Successful applicants received comparable Premier benefits for 90 days. Keeping that tier through January 31, 2028 required eligible United spending within the trial period. According to the airline, the spending thresholds were $1,500 for Premier Silver, $3,000 for Gold, $4,500 for Platinum, and $7,000 for 1K. Base fares and carrier-imposed surcharges on United and United Express flights counted, while taxes, seat fees, and paid upgrades were excluded.

Henry Harteveldt, founder of Atmosphere Research Group, told CNBC this was war, airline style. United pursued the passengers airlines prize most: people who fly frequently, book premium cabins and influence company travel decisions. By building the campaign around SpaceX’s Starlink system, United turned connectivity into a product claim. Starlink remained absent from most of United’s fleet. More than 600 aircraft had been equipped by October 1, with 1,000 targeted by year-end. Customers on unequipped aircraft encountered older connections costing at least $8.
