Belfast’s first-ever Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann has attracted over 1.6m visitors during its run from 2 to 9 August 2026, delivering a substantial boost to local hospitality and tourism businesses. The final attendance figure of 1,653,999 visitors has doubled the original conservative estimate of 800,000, triggering a commercial windfall expected to scale far beyond the projected £53m economic boost.
Economy Minister Caoimhe Archibald has confirmed that actual attendance has vastly outpaced expectations. Long-term retail and cultural dividends are predicted to reach up to €100m overall. Translink has reported an unprecedented 620,000 additional passenger journeys compared to the same period last year, requiring hundreds of extra bus and rail services. Saturday, 8 August, marked the single busiest day of the year for Belfast city centre, logging 289,560 unique visitors.
Hotels, guesthouses and short-term rentals were entirely booked out, while city centre bars and restaurants operated at peak capacity. The event generated £13.6m (€16m) in Advertising Value Equivalent across local, national and international media outlets. Over 5,000 competitors from 22 countries travelled to Belfast to perform, with 438 official events and 200-plus competitions staged across 90 venues. The initial £1m strategic funding from the Department for the Economy achieved a massive multiplier effect on direct consumer spending.
