Argentina experienced a remarkable surge in domestic tourism during the first long weekend of 2026, with three million people travelling across the country to celebrate Carnival.

This figure represents a 7.2pc increase compared to the same period in 2025, according to data from the Argentine Confederation of Medium-Sized Enterprises. The economic boost was substantial, generating over one trillion pesos in direct spending on accommodation, transport, food, beverages, recreation, and shopping.

Tourists stayed an average of three days, with daily expenditure per person reaching approximately 111,605 pesos, though this was down 7.7pc in real terms from the previous year. Popular destinations included the Atlantic Coast, Patagonia, and northern provinces like Entre Ríos and Corrientes, where traditional parades and festivals drew large crowds. Air travel also hit new highs, with carriers like Aerolíneas Argentinas and JetSmart transporting 313,000 passengers.
